chuck hagel's nomination is held up. the expectation is he'll ultimately be confirmed but bill cohen said something this week to politico that caught my attention that does underline the problems that hagel could have as defense secretary. he said it's going to put him in a difficult position once he gets there. those resentments will weigh around. i think it's tragic what is happening and i think it's shameful. if he is confirmed, is' weaker defense secretary and is that something that weighs on the president's mind? >> no, he is not going to be a weaker defense secretary. he will be a great defense secretary. he volunteered to go to vietnam. heavily decorated when he was there. well performing when he was there. the last four years as the president chairman of the president intelligence advisory board in the senate where he is a leading republican senator. he is always done the hard work and made it look easy and exactly what he did. how is he going to work with republicans, john mccain who will be coming up in a coupl

president obama and chuck hagel agree on so many things they're actually friends. they have a positive view about the same things in the world. i think the president is sticking his neck out for this guy because he really wants him to be his defense chief that and somebody pointed out to me that mccain said he made the statement back when he was a republican, as if he's no longer a republican because he dares to agree with the guy hiring him to be the defense chief. >> dwight eisenhower wasn't a republican either because he wasn't a hawk. he took the heat for that because he was a guy who knew what's going on with the war. >> you're not officially a republican if you don't want to bomb iran. john mccain put it out there and said, basically, you know what? he was mean to president bush, he criticized the iraq war. his fellow members of the senate thought he was not a fellow republican. that's rich from john mccain who made it hit life's work to oppose him. >> is that chuck hagel who fathered a child and his wife who was a drug addict? yet he forgives those people. >

it is not about chuck hagel even though they have issues. as i said before in the program and said all this week, i don't know how good the head of dod, chuck hagel, would be. >> i can tell you my husband and in the marine corps and watched the hearings. it was abysmal. you can say it is the -- >> no, the hearings -- >> horrible. you expect senators to just jump onboard because the president nominated somebody. he was awful. >> why -- if he was awful then why not just give him a vote? if he was awful, give him a vote. if americans support the second amendment and don't like gun control, put it up for a vote. that's basic logic. if you are right, put it up for a vote. if you are about where the american people are on guns then put it up for vote. >> this whole thing about gosh, it has been overplayed. no, it hasn't been overplayed. we still don't have a solution. we still haven't gotten to the bottom of it. we don't know why we didn't have security in place. we don't know where -- >> the world is a terrible and unpredictable place. >> the pre
